Day 11: I'm Old- Learning Spanish and the Piano

Updated: May 29, 2023

SO I knew it would be hard, but not this hard!

I thought that maybe stretching the brain would help make more room available. Yeah no. There are some people out there that can command more brain space - that's not me.

It's funny, one of my favorite movies is THE FAMILY THAT PREYS by Tyler Perry and one the greatest actresses to walk this planet in my mind, Kathy Bates, played the character Charlotte and she was best friends with a black woman, another amazing actress, Alfre Woodard. They went on a road trip and took all these pictures of their adventures. One night, Charlotte was super frustrated about the camera, she couldn't take any more photos and couldn't figure out how to retrieve and reset them. Alice told her they are just photos and they can get another camera in the morning. Charlotte stops and says, NO MEMORY IS FULL.

It was a double entandre as they say, one word or phrase that has 2 meanings simultaneously occurring. And Charlotte meant that. The photos were her memories and the camera (ie. Her brain) was full. She no longer could remember and there was no more space left.

MEMORY IS FULL.

All that to say, watch the movie, lol!

Back to Colombia.

All this vet stuff is in my head, new stuff can't fit. Changes are difficult.

And now, trying something new like a language and an art and a sport, MEMORY IS FULL.

But keep trying.

Piano. I grew up long and lanky. My fingers were referred to as 'spider fingers' and trust, that gave me so much insecurity during my childhood. But long fingers and long legs meant I was built to run track, play basketball and play piano, right?! Problems were: 1. I hated being told WHAT to do (rebellious) and 2. I hated all of those sports. I wanted to do gymnastics and ice skating! I did actually do them. But Ice skating got expensive and time schedules for my mom. And gymnastics, who TF has ever heard of a 5'8 10 yo gymnast? Yeah, at camp one day, the lady trainer said, "I can't keep changing the bars for you". How rude! But I get it. But don't say that to a 10 yo.

So Piano. Decided to try it. I see these musicians now just soaring over keys and making amazing sounds.

I played the flute in junior high. Couldn't get a note out for 2-3 weeks. My conductor guy (yeah forgot the title) put me on the recorder for Hot Cross Buns and why he thought this tiny little piece of an instrument could help me - i don't know. But it did! That's why he does what he does! And I went back to the flute and started going for it!!!! Ended up getting into the Jr Orchestra later that year playing my favorite JINGLE BELLS ROCK.

Persistence. Rebellion. Determination.

3 more weeks.
